Born in 1966, Sonam Wangchuk is an Indian engineer and education reformist.

Wangchuk founded SECMOL (Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh) in 1988.

SECMOL aims to reform the educational system in Ladakh, making it more practical and student-friendly.

He developed the Ice Stupa technique to solve water scarcity in the cold deserts of Ladakh.

Ice Stupas are artificial glaciers that store winter water for use in the spring and summer.

His life and work inspired the character of Phunsukh Wangdu in the Bollywood movie "3 Idiots."

He received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2018 for his contributions to education and innovation.

Wangchuk advocates for sustainable living and environmental conservation in the Himalayas.

He went on a 21 day hunger strike term as Climate fast in March 2024 for the protection of Ladakh and Himalayas against the mining activities.
